Nariman in Favour of Probe Against Ex-CJI Balakrishnan

Fali Nariman

Supreme Court advocate and constitutional expert Fali S Nariman has supported the stand taken by retired Supreme Court judge V R Krishna Iyer in the controversy related to the wealth amassed by the family members of former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan. Iyer had demanded that a judicial panel should probe into the alleged wealth accumulated by Balakrishnan’s son-in law P V Sreenijan and others. In a letter to Iyer, Nariman said, “Your prompt and pithily devastating remarks on the conduct of National Human Rights Commission Chairman K G Balakrishnan deserves several rounds of applause. We all are deeply beholden to you for always reminding judges, past and present, that honour comes first.”

Meanwhile, more incidents of land owned by Balakrishnan’s family has come to the fore. There were reports that Balakrishnan’s younger brother K G Bhaskaran, now a government pleader at Kerala High Court, his wife Rathnamma and other family members own 60 acres of land in Dindigal district, Tamil Nadu. The land was registered in 2005 and 2007 under five deeds.
